Can I dye my hair brown after dying it black that has faded?

I dyed my hair black 3 months ago but its been fading back to a dark brown. To help take out the black, I've been using sun-in to lighten it. Now my hair is a dark reddish brown. Is it possible to dye it an ashy brown successfully? Or should I lighten it more? Thanks in advance

The only way it's going to work is if you go to a professional beauty store, ask an associate to help you find the current level of the color that is lightened. the only thing you can really do just using color would be to apply the same level of color over it, but with a different base (like you said, applying an ash over the red, which would cover the redness of it, but it would still be the level of darkness). i wouldnt be using sun-in for your hair.. thats horrible for your hair. if you want to really lighten, i'd go to a professional. lightening your color rarely ever works at home.

Taking dark hair lighter takes time and patience. You will need to lighten it a couple more times if it was pitch black before, if not, you will have splotches of different shades of brown and it looks horrible. You have to wait at least 2 weeks after lighting it to do it again, at least 2 or 3 times. Good luck.

from experience NO, because I dyed my hair black 4 years ago, then I got bored of it (after around 4 or 5 month) my roots were overgrown (you could see my brown hair on my roots. when I tried to dyed it back to my hair color ( brown) it DI D NOT WORK! it made it worst! I have my roots super noticeable brown and the rest black, just like before... I just waited over 3 years to get ready of the black naturally... cutting my ends every 4 or 3 months. I will never dye my hair again
