Ok, well my hair is naturally medium brown but i dyed it blonde......but then i got sick of it so i dyed it back to brown. I told the stylist "i'd rather have it too light, than too dark" If you are somewhat pale, choose a shade lighter than what you would want, just in case you/he left it in too long. Dark shades would make you look even more pale. If you are tan, dont worry about it. Do an ash brown or medium brown. The haircolor the sylist used on me was called toffee, but keep in mind that every stylist uses diff. names for their colors!!!

Are you doing this yourself? Do you want to look kind of natural to match (sort of) your roots for grow-in problems once you start dying, its hard to go back! I always used Miss Clairol products, they came with a nice conditioner and it smelled the least nasty of all, had great coverage and colors.

If you have gold highlights, chose colors with 'golden' in the name, like golden medium brown-this may fade out with some brassy orange/red.

If your hair has more of a green/grey undertone, use Ash Browns, med or dark-it may look kind of flat tho, ash brown is tough to dye. When you look a the kind of brown it is and compare it to the others, you'll understandwhat I mean.

You could also get something with a wine colored type of red highlight in the brown..that's always dramatic and fun.

Go to a beauty supply store and check your skin tone against the little hair twist samples wtih your arm and see which one will work for you. Ask sales person for help, they love to!
