I had a perm about 5 months ago and recently dyed my hair dark brown but roots didnt take...why?

My hair is brown, i put a dark brown hair dye on to cover my...'ahem' greys, it went dark brown apart from the roots which went a lighter ginger colour, my perm has grown out about an inch...confused

Because the hair that has been permed is more porous. In other words damaged. So it is going to suck up more color and be darker. And the hair at the root is going to be lighter.
