I am not good at picking out shades. I have dark brown hair and eyes with olive skin that tans easily. What are some suggestions of colors and brands that would look nice on me?

Are you asking for shades as in picking the right foundation, blush or eyeshadow...or all of the above?
For foundation, since most olive skin is warm, I'd try in the warm, olive and golden categories. Since you tan easily, you'd most likely fit into the "medium" category.
For blush/face colors, you should be able to wear a broad spectrum of colors as long as they are warm or neutral...and not too strong. The best way to pick the right blush though is to pinch the apples of your cheeks, and then pick a blush color that looks like the color of your "piched" cheeks...this will be your natural "flush".
With brown eyes, you can explore away %26amp; get by with just about anything. Safe colors would be neutral earthy tones.
Lastly, I'd suggest trying mineral makeup. The wonderful thing about minerals is...
1) you can sample, sample, sample! --these can be free or inexpensive.
2) it looks much more natural and is way more forgiving than traditional cosmetics.
3) if a color is wrong, you can always *mix* to make it right! For instance, if a color is too cool, you can mix some gold or yellow (for pigments: i.e. eyeshadow or face color) or warm (for foundation) in it to make it more warm or neutral...if a color is too warm you can mix some silver or pink (for pigments: i.e. eyeshadow or face color) or cool (for foundation) in it to make it more cool or neutral.
4) you will learn more about your skintone, skin type and what works a lot faster with MMU than traditional cosmetics.
5) 99+% Mineral Makeup companies do not test on animals
6) Mineral Cosmetics don't have an expiration date, as long as you don't contaminate your jars (use a swirly dish/rice bowl, blotting paper or your hand, instead of the jar or lid of your containers) and keep the lids on tight and away from moisture...so, they last longer and you end up saving money compared to traditional cosmetics that need tossed out on average of 3-6 month cycles.
7) Mineral cosmetics are more natural and a good one will have less than 12 ingredients and contain no cheap fillers or known irritants like: talc, bismuth oxychloride, parabens (synthetic preservatives), zea mays (cornstarch), FD%26amp;C dyes, Lake dyes, mineral oil, tetrosodium EDTA, urea (female horse pee), BHT, kaolin or other clays (this is bad mainly for dry %26amp; ultra sensitive skin types)...to name a few.
All companies below have samples available on their websites. Some are free where you just pay shipping, while others are just inexpensive. Ingredients lists are found on each of their websites and you do not need to join any clubs or set up automatic shipments.

I have found that for darker complexions, natural tones work the best....you can even work in some blues. Mostly greens, browns, whites, grayes, tan, etc.. look the most appealing. When it comes to eye shadow I think you should blend 2- 3 colors, lights on top, dark on lids. Keep the lips simple ....maybe even just some shiny lip gloss, or some chap stick.
