Want to dye hair medium to dark brown - have naturally dirty blond hair but previously dyed it red?

I've been wanting to dye my hair either medium or dark brown. My hair is naturally dark dirty blond, and last summer I dyed it red using L'Oreal Excellence cream. Now it's extremely faded.

My hair is fairly dry and thin and is of medium length (about 3 inches below shoulders), but this brand didn't seem to do much damage.

Does anyone have any advice on how to go about dyeing my hair brown? Will the fact that I have faded red (now a light orangish colour) still on my hair have an effect on the brown dye? And if I dye it dark brown, will it be darker than the colour on the box or relatively the same? (beacuse i've heard the stories about people's hair going black when dyeing it dark brown...)

Any good brands of colours (e.g. ones with lots of moisture!) that would be best for my hair would be much appreciated.

Also, should I go directly to a permenant one or try a semi-permenant first?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

my best bet is DONT dye it that could be the reason why your hairs thin and dry

if you get a lighht brown dye it will probably turn orange but if i was you i would go with a darker brown just to make sure it wont turn orange i would try a semi-permenant first just to make sure its the color you realy want=)

Before you color your hair again, buy a color remover. Color-Oops is one brand. This will bring your hair back to your original color, and you can re-color with whatever you want. Just to be on the safe side, do the strand test to double check what color you will end up with. Or, go to a professional to have it done. They will fix anything that goes wrong. Good luck!

dark brown does look black at first for a while but will cover all your hair first just dye the pre-dyed hair leave for about 15 to 20 minutes then dye the rest of your hair and leave for another 15 minutes should work just fine but if in doubt do a strand test first....

I recommend Revlon Colorsilk brand.

Not only does it not contain harsh chemicals, it's only like 3 bucks at Target.

I've dyed my hair vibrant red then medium brown...

It turned dark brown with redish strands.

Try finding a meduim brown ash-toned shade to cancel out the red.

I've heard that a colour remover can be quite harsh on your hair, though I've never used one myself.

If it were me, I'd do a deep conditioning treatment a few days before you dye it- a) It'll help your restore hair and b) conditioner tends to get more colour out of your hair than shampoo, especially reds. Don't do it the same day you're planning to dye it though because it won't take as well as it should.

I generally use Schwarzkopf -Their country colours range has some nice browns.

Henna also nice browns and natural so you don't end up choking on ammonia in your bathroom.

Red hair dye comes out of hair very easily, so dying over it with a dark brown hair dye should not effect the outcome of your hair colour. If you dye it dark brown and it turns out black don't worry about it, because the excess will just wash out and fade and you will be left with the dark brown colour. If you aren't quite sure about how it will work out try a semi-permenant first, and if you're happy with the colour go permenant.
