I bought Clairol Born Blonde Maxi Nice'n easy hair dye, and it says that it will dye anywhere from light blonde to dark brown/black hair. It is one of the few dyes recommended for dying black hair a platinum blonde. Does anyone have any suggestions to make this work better? I've heard some people talk about using foil for heat or not washing my hair for a couple days beforehand...
i could use all of the suggestions I can get.
thank you! [=
I am dying my dark, dark brown hair (a lot of people mistake it for black) to light blonde. Help?
I've never heard of that box dye, however unless it contains bleach, the most it will do is turn your hair to a brown/light brown.
To go to a light blonde you absolutely have to use bleach, and then follow it up with a toner so that you don't end up with orange hair.
I suggest you go to a hairdresser if you don't know what you're doing. Better that, then to completely ruin your hair, right?
Alright I actually looked it up online, and it does contain bleach. And since your hair is natural and free of dye (im assuming so?) it should give you at least a dark blonde. If it comes out a brassy blonde/orange color, head to a Sally's and get a toner, they only cost about 4 bucks.
As for tips...don't wash your hair about 2 days before bleaching it, since the oils will protect your scalp a little.
I don't suggest using heat, but you could if you don't feel it's light enough. Put on a shower cap while the mixture is on your hair, and if after the alloted time, wash a small strand of hair and see what color it is. If it's too dark you can try blasting your hair with a blowdryer for a short while to intensify the lightning.
Don't forget to condition like mad after. Your hair will be so stressed out.

since your hair is that dark, you might want to try getting more than one box cause it might not dye it ALL the way even though it is known for doing that...

I dont mean to burst your bubble but if you have dark hair your hair is not gonna turn blonde. Unless you bleach it but I dont recommend that. I know this because i tried to do the same thing but i got it professionally done it comes out to a brown-ish color. You have to go little by little to dye it light blonde as in dye it every few months lighter and then you'll get the color you want.

well i think you should definately go to a salon but the best way to do it at home is to do it slowly. each time dye it lighter colors so you don't damage your hair. going from dark to really light could damage your hair for years. why don't you try blonde highlights first that makes a big difference too and looks really nice.. i have very dark hair and have blonde highlights and my hair is actually toned so it's very light.

my hair used to be jet black, i used herbal essence blonding kit. it worked great for my hair, i couldn't believe how blonde it got. since my hair is very long and thick i had to use three bottles. but i love the results.

Pay someone to do it, if you over process it you could loose a lot of it. Most over the counter dye's cannot get that clarity we want and will most likely just turn your hair orange. If you cannot afford it, wait until you can. You may regret it if you dont.

Please don't do it yourself, the box color from the store does not work on very dark hair, regardless of what they say!It has to be bleached up to blonde which could take two applications then it needs to be toned.Trust me go to a color tech. at a salon it will be worth it to have the right shade of blonde, if you do it and mess it up it could end up being very expensive if you have to go to a salon for a color correction.

You should never use "box" color on your hair. You need professional hair color (from Sally's or some other beauty supply store) and a professional to apply it. You risk the chance of having orange brassy hair by trying to take dark hair more than 3 shades lighter than what it is naturally. Your hair sounds like it is level 2 or 3 and you are trying to reach level 8 or higher(level 1 is black and level 10 is platinum blond).

DO NOT do this yourself. Go to a professional salon, or you will regret it.
First.. dark brown hair is a 'level' 4-5. Platinum is level 10-11, or higher.
this means you are going to try to lift 6 levels or more. Most over the counter box colors only lift 4 levels. like from dark brown to a light brow. Even if what you have is a bleach, you may just end up with orange hair. I do hair for a living, and have done many corrective colors with ppl trying to do this same thing. Basically, you are looking at a double process color. which means you won't acheive your desired color at one attempt. You're talking bleach, which will dry out your hair. and depending on the type of hair you have, could cause breakage. using foils is highlights. Using this technique will more likely be able to achieve hilights of a blonde, but not platnium. With foils, heat is used. Trust me, don't attempt this yourself. Go see a professional.
